September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, so it’s a great time to highlight a few of our Team Summer kids and tell you about all the good they’ve been doing! As you probably know, once kids get a Team Summer gift, it’s then their turn to give a gift to another kid fighting cancer. And they can give as many gifts as they want! Check out how Landon, Dylan, and Michael have done just that!
TEAM SUMMER KID LANDON
Landon is nine years old and lives in Ohio. He’s been busy giving Team Summer gifts this year, surprising three kids with gifts…all while battling leukemia!
His latest gift was to four-year-old Maveryc, also from Ohio. Maveryc has been fighting leukemia, too, and for the last 15 months has endured what has felt like endless rounds of chemotherapy. That hasn’t left Maveryc with a lot of time for fun. Certainly not the kind of fun that a four year old should be having!
Landon knew what Maveryc needed was a little adventure in his life. After welcoming him to Team Summer, he told Maveryc to head to his backyard for a big surprise!
Waiting in his driveway was a shiny red 4-wheeler that was just his size! His sister rode shotgun, and off they went. SO much more fun than hanging around a hospital! And in case you didn’t notice, that license plate reads MAVERYC! Everyone on the block knows just who that fancy car belongs to!
TEAM SUMMER KID DYLAN
Dylan is 17 years old and lives in Texas. For almost two years, he’s been fighting a rare form of bone marrow cancer. In spite of everything he has been going through, Dylan has given three Team Summer gifts!
His latest gift was to 7-year-old Carter who also lives in Texas and is battling leukemia. Dylan found out that Carter is a superhero SUPER FAN! You might say Carter is downright obsessed with all the Marvel characters! With some super sleuthing and some super sneaking around (with help from Carter’s super family!), Dylan was able to surprise Carter with a full bedroom makeover! The theme? You guessed it – Marvel Superheroes!! Now all Carter has to do is look around to remind himself that he is totally up for this cancer fight!
TEAM SUMMER KID MICHAEL
Michael, who lives in Georgia, got his Team Summer gift five years ago when he was 15 years old and fighting osteosarcoma. He has been giving gifts to other kids with cancer ever since! He’s 20 now and has given…wait for it…NINE Team Summer gifts! WOW!
His latest gift was to 11-year-old Ja’Ziyah, also in Georgia. Ja’Ziyah is fighting sarcoma cancer and has a tumor located way too close to a major artery. That means her treatment has required multiple, risky surgeries…on top of proton radiation and chemotherapy. Can you say stressful?? Michael found a great way to cheer her up. We found out that she had heard about the release of the new bright yellow iPad, and she wanted it SO BAD! Take a look at her face as she got her wish!
Landon, Dylan, and Michael, thank you from all of us for bringing so much joy into the lives of kids battling cancer. You are the heart of Team Summer and our superheroes! Keep up the great work!
